When to Replace Your Universal Power Supply (UPS)
Share
In our previous newsletter, we emphasized the importance and value of a Universal Power Supply (UPS). This month, let’s discuss the topic of when to replace or maintain your UPS. Over time, it is necessary to replace the UPS. This routine maintenance is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your investment and system equipment.
When to replace a UPS depends on the following various factors
- the battery's service life
- the equipment connected to the UPS
- the frequency and intensity of power surges
- the operating conditions
- the load placed on the battery/UPS over time
Infor strongly recommends using a dedicated circuit for all POS equipment in addition to a Surge/Battery Backup.
The most common component to fail is the battery itself. In our experience we expect battery life to be typically every 2 to 3 years. Although many manufacturers recommend 3 to 5 years, we have found some restaurant environments are too hostile for such claims.

Typical issues observed in older UPS units include
- Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) fails to turn on due to internal failure
- May not effectively safeguard your equipment against power surges
- Signs of smoking or unpleasant odors suggest a critical breakdown that needs prompt intervention
- Inadequate battery capacity due to age or load for a proper shutdown or sudden shutdowns during power fluctuations
We suggest replacing any UPS exceeding the 2 to 3 years range, even though 3 to 5 years is possible depending on the environment. A UPS, as with any device will eventually fail, especially the battery. You can order your replacement UPS here.
